Once a week cooking adventure. It’s on.

Last  night I embarked on a big adventure. Making this chard spinach white bean stew from Smitten Kitchen.

I think it took me 3x longer than the average person to make this but it tasted legit. I blame the lengthy cooking experience on my eyes just completely freaking out the second I started chopping the shallots. Seriously I start pouring out tears and can’t open my eyes. It’s a situation.

see?! how can I cook like this?!

Old roomie and I got food and vino at Trader Joe’s. Started chopping…

big knives are frightening

Then we stirred…

My eyes came back to life and I stirred…

professional

Vino! For cooking… seriously!

dry wine= chardonnay if you were wondering

Add liquid, boil, simmer for 20 min, add spinach, cook 5 minutes and voila!

I’ll be eating you for the next 3 days.

On a separate note, thoughts on this year’s Starbucks holiday cups? Not a fan. I miss cups circa 2008. The past two years they’ve gotten all artsy and more pastely and just as fun Christmasy.

a fox? really? is that a fox? I don't even know too artsy

Tonight I will go to spin class and run my mile and eat stew.

Currently obsessed with Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra, Galway Girl by The Punters and Janet Devlin’s version of Your Song from X Games (thanks Linds!)

Enjoy the more winter like day.

A sweaty morning

It is not cold outside yet I went running in long pants and a sweatshirt and sweat for 4.32 miles and nearly crawled home. You’d think this was my first time running in months. Maybe it was the 20 push ups I randomly did at the end that put me over the edge but I ended my run SO tired. Then I could.not.stop sweating. I didn’t stop sweating until 10 minutes after I sat down at my desk at 8:15am and my run ended at 7:05am. You know when you work out or even walk quickly then stop and that is when you just start pouring out sweat? I mean I sweat more than the average girl but rushing to get ready while sweating is not easy at all. Ice cold shower never helps either. Anyway, my hair is a frizzy wavy sweaty mess. Luckily my coworkers have seen me at my complete worst and best so I really dont’ care.

prettyyy and dark

water

feels like summer looks like summer. who knew this existed?!

AND I’m listening to holiday music which makes everything better, sweating or not. Slightly weird listening to holiday music considering it’s about 70 degrees outside… but I lived 23 years of hot sunny Chirstmases in CA so this should be normal. And I’m not complaining because I’m wearing a dress NO tights and a cardigan. Embracing the heat wave. Remember last year at this time?! Puffy coats.

proof

I’ve also had this recent obsession with Girl Talk and listen to it any time I’m moving. Girl Talk at 7am is intense. I should ease into my day but instead I’m rocking out to mash ups of a bunch of rap songs. But it’s great because it’s like 5 seconds of every song you love. I highly recommend running to Girl Talk.

Anyway… went to the dentist yesterday and the door man said “good to see you again!” Am I a regular at the dentist?! ack. I guess going every 3 months makes me a regular and I needed a new lesson on how to brush my teeth. Yep I’m 26 and learned how to brunch my teeth again. A good refresher I suppose. My work drinks were cancelled (woo!) so I was able to get my mile run in! I ran to Yoga Works which magically is exactly 1 mile from my apartment. Yoga was good. We did lots of crow/side crow/jump back to chaturanga poses. As I was walking to Whole Foods I got that “I love NY so much it has such a cool energy” feeling. I randomly get these feelings and I love it. Puts a huge smile on my face.

Now it’s pouring. Snow>rain. I’m also talking about who knows what. Tonight I’m going to dinner at a friend’s place who I haven’t seen in far too long. Tomorrow I have no plans. shocker!

Enjoy the summery weather.

9 hours of sleep > 8 hours of sleep

I really wanted to run this morning and set my alarm for 5:53 then 6:00am. I somehow sleepily snoozed through those and woke up at 6:18. It’s too early to do math but then I figured I would only run for 30 minutes by the time I got out of bed and it felt cold outside even though it was not and I was just so cozy and my throat was a little scratchy. It didn’t take much to convince myself to roll over and sleep more. I then thought OH I’ll wake up so I can walk to work HA I rolled out of bed at 7:20am and I usually leave at 7:30am. Anyway I am now at work and will not be working out today. I guess today will be my “free” day for the mile a day challenge. (I gave myself a day a week to not run a mile. I personally think biking 21 miles > running 1 mile but I guess that’s not the point!). Well.. the point can really be anything since it’s my own personal challenge with my friend Courtney, anyway we gave ourselves 1 free day. Moral of story more sleep I think is always better than less and I will celebrate the day I am fully caught up on sleep. I feel pretty good right now though.

The rest of the weekend was great! We beat UCLA 50-0 (embarrassing for them muahaha). Sunday I went to yoga at Yoga Works (my $30 new member trial has officially paid off… after 2 classes. WHY is yoga so expensive in this city!?) ran my mile at Equinox then went to brunch with a bunch of friends at Meme Mediterranean. I love that place. I got the Shakshuka and a bloody mary. All very very good.

yum

Frolicked around meatpacking after. Kiehl’s has a photo booth. Obviously did a photoshoot. I’ve looked better.

I spy 4 girls...

Then I hung out in my apartment and actually relaxed. What a concept. I knew moving into a studio would make me a calmer more relaxed person. SUCCESS. And I got to stare at my pretty pretty new stripe. Seriously my room is SO much brighter and happier (and more Argentina like… still having travel withdrawals).

I totally live in BA

Now that I’m basically a pro chef, I wanted to bake for my coworker’s birthday and was deciding between s’more brownies and salted caramel brownies. I chose the salted caramel, rolled myself out of bed and went to the market. I know to some this may be the easiest thing ever but I’m quite proud of myself for making these from scratch! I even made the salted caramel sauce. YUM. and they’re actually REALLY good. I mean you can’t really go wrong with chocolate and salted caramel.   I think I could have smeared on some more caramel though…

multitasking!

success

It’s taking a lot of control to stay glued to my desk and not eat ALL of these brownies.

Is it weird that I like rocking out to Girl Talk in the morning?

Anyway, happy Monday! Enjoy the spring like weather.

Can NY stay like this forever?

Could you imagine if we ate delicious Thanksgiving food all the time, hung out and played games with friends and drank mulled wine every night, and the winter was high 60s? Life would be pretty great.

Rewind! Thanksgiving was amazing!! Started with sleeping in. I didn’t end up doing the Thanksgiving run in the Bronx because my body was craving sleep. I NEVER sleep in so I slept until 1130. Amazing. Then I went on a great 4 mile run and it was absolutely beautiful outside.

This year a few of my friends and I stayed in the city and Michelle hosted a Friendsgiving. Best idea ever and… props to everyone because this home made meal was phenomenal. Have I mentioned that I can’t cook and am retarded in the kitchen? I’ll brag for just one second… I don’t think I can say that anymore because my TWO stuffings (yes I made two) were amaaaaaaazing!! I can’t take credit for the recipes but I was chopping, sauteing, mixing, cooking, and drinking rum apple cider and they turned out great. One is a family recipe (2 sticks of butter of course it’s good). Very simple with just cornbread, white loaf of bread, celery, onion, salt, pepper and sage. The “gourmet” recipe is a cranberry, fig and sausage recipe from Brown Eyed Baker. After my lesson in chopping in onion (which I quickly forgot) I proceeded to chop onions and celery, saute cranberries, figs and brandy, then MEANWHILE I cooked celery, onion, and sausage then mixed it all together with chicken stock and added toasted (don’t worry about it I totally toasted the pine nuts while doing everything else AND drinking apple cider).

cranberries, figs, brandy (no smoke alarms or anything!)

pine nuts and rosemary

Since my kitchen(ette) is baby size I went to my friend’s place in Williamsburg to cook and drink rum with apple cider. I want apple cider and pumpkin everything for the entire winter. For some strange reason my friend decided to make a third stuffing! However.. I’d call it more artichoke pizza in stuffing form. Spinach, artichoke, cream, 1 pound brie, bread = heaven.

Got to Michelle’s to begin festivities! Everything everyone made was seriously amazing. EVERYTHING.

the light reflecting off the city was unreal. this does not do it justice.

Thanksgiving consisted of eating a lot, drinking lots of wine and mulled wine, playing 2 games of hilarious cranium (thought I could draw a poodle.. ya they thought it was a cat on roller skates and it’s hilarious with the humdinger when someone actually thinks they are humming the song. tone deaf! I can’t talk because I”m 100% tone deaf) with Home Alone then the Grinch in the background. A few more friends came over to enjoy pumpkin pie and apple pie dessert. It was a very happy holiday. We obviously did the whole what are you thankful for… I’m thankful for my friends everyday so that’s kinda a given so this year (and most years) I said my health and the ability to take a deep breathe and bend my legs and have legs.

Minus going to work for a few hours Friday the weekend was off to a great start and it has felt LONG. I love when weekends feel long.

Friday I left work at 1pm (silly market) then checked out Yoga Works in Union Square. I’m always searching for a yoga studio that feels like “home” like Bryan Kest Power Yoga did in Santa Monica. Strala Yoga and Yoga High are very close but I love exploring other studios. I signed up for the 2 week new member thing for $30 (MUST GO more than once … ) and took a 2/3 hour and half class. I love a more advanced class because they let you play upside down for like 3o minutes. I’ve been working on my handstand practice and yesterday was soooo cool! I seriously wanted to look around and be like DID YOU just see that?!!? Anyway I was able to hold the handstand and just… hang out and the only reason I came out of it was because the teacher started talking. We did a bunch of variations like a regular kick up handstand, going up from downward dog in a pike position and pressing/jumping up from a straddle. Very fun. I’m ready for my inversions workshop at Yoga High!

Post yoga I ran a mile at Equinox (trying this whole run a mile a day from Thanksgiving until Christmas with a free day a week) then exchanged some stuff and bought plates at Fishs Eddy. My hiking/biking backpack clip broke in Argentina (oops) and I just went into Paragon sport without a receipt, tags, anything and they exchanged it! I then walked into Anthropologie with my sad candle that I broke. I cut the wick too short and it won’t light and they gave me a new one. People must be in the holiday spirit! Ate more leftovers then got a drink with old roomie at Cibar, Spice Pumpkin martini? yes please, then saw The Descendants. Depressing. Good acting but depressing.

This morning I slept in a little untill 930 then went on a great 2 hour bike ride. Rode up to Central Park and did the loops twice. I was inspired by all the very fast bikers and tried to keep up wit them but just couldn’t! I’ll cut myself some slack… the guy I was trying to keep up with looked super hardcore and his calves were like.. 4 x the size of mine. My converse are not hardcore. cute but not hc.

hardcore or not this is pretty!

Post bike I grabbed an omelette at a cafe on Hudson, hung with Michelle on the Charles pier to soak up the last few rays of the fall, then repainted my stripe in my room. I originally painted it cranberry because I love fall colors. However I live in a very small studio and after South America I was inspired by the bright fun happy colors.

my inspiration. a restaurant in Punta del Este

byebye red hello blue

I’m obsessed and somehow my new apartment feels more like home. The pumpkin souffle candle helps with that too :)

Tonight I’m off to cheer on USC!! We are playing UCLA, our big rival. FIGHT ON!

Thanksgiving Thankfulness

Well tomorrow I’ll be busy eating, drinking and being merry so I’ll tell you what I’m thankful for today.

I’m thankful for…

My health. I am so lucky that I can move and walk and jump and run and bike and breathe.

Health insurance. Thank you health insurance for letting me pay $5 for my $2100 medication.

My friends. I’m SO incredibly lucky to have a group of friends who I know would do absolutely anything for me. They are still my friends even though I’m slightly crazy. So thank you friends for just being there. And being awesome.

My sister. She lives really far away in San Diego but I don’t know how I would live without her.

My paycheck. It let’s me live and have fun and eat and travel.

Resilience. I am glad I can bounce back and somehow stay very optimistic even in tough times.

My imagination. Life would just be boring without it. And let me tell you… my daydreams are kinda out of control. It’s fun.

Pandora. It gets me through the day and commuting.

My yoga practice. It helps me find peace.

Ally my fav yoga teacher and Laura my fav spin teacher. They inspire me to push myself.

The end.

Last night I went on a date (!!) it was fun.

had to email all my friends my outfit

I really want to do the Thanksgiving Marathon (6 mile) run tomorrow but I think my body needs sleep. I haven’t slept in in weeks (minus sleeping till 2 one day in Argentina) but waking up at 730 and taking the train for an hour to the Bronx doesn’t sound like the best way to spend Thanksgiving morning. Sleeping in, maybe running when I feel like it, grabbing some cider and heading over to my friend’s to cook sounds way better. Speaking of sleep do you think my bosses would notice if I curled up in a ball under my desk? I’ll wake up for phone calls!

And speaking of running. I MIGHT do the run a mile a day from Thanksgiving till New Years challenge I may just do a mile a day until Christmas. I like the challenge. It’s only 10ish minutes out of your life. I wonder if I could do it every morning.

So I’m going to do yoga tonight at Equinox soho, then buy stuffing ingredients (I’m making two! This should be interesting) then lounging, wine, movie, watching friend make pie crust at friend’s apt. Tomorrow I will SLEEP then run or bike, then cook, then eat and drink and eat and eat. Friday I will go to work. LAME silly market. Then I will sleep some more. Saturday I think I’ll bike the park, buy a Christmas tree ( woohoo!), watch USC kill UCLA. Sunday I want to bake and watch Christmas movies.

Very excited for the holiday weekend. HAPPY Thanksgiving.

It’s a folky kind of day

I love when music brings you back to a particular time. Since moving to NY music now brings me back to seasons rather than events. I remember listening to certain songs bundled up in a puffy coat and fur hat. Local Natives popped on my iPhone today and it brought me right back to feeling cold. The Twilight soundtrack and Michael Watson’s ‘Big Bird in a Small Cage’ will always remind me of the snowy season. I came across this folk article  and immedietely added all new artists to my grooveshark playlist because if you take a peek outside it’s totally a folk music kind of day. However, I often play Girl Talk Pandora and when is Girl Talk ever appropriate at 8am?

Last night was a much needed ME night. I went to my fav spin teacher’s class at Equinox (although it was the same workout as Friday’s class. TWO 10 minute hills of death). I was soo incredibly sore going into the class but oddly left feeling way better. Then I got dinner at Whole Foods. There is something very comforting about Whole Foods. I think it’s because when I lived in Santa Monica we lived across the street from one and would pop over all the time for samples.

mish mosh

no meat? seriously who am I?!

I actually washed my hair (big deal because it’s rare. That makes me sound extremely dirty. By rare I mean every few days or every other day if it needs it but if you know me then you know that my hair magically never looks dirty).

Then I got caught up on Parenthood! I love this show. I actually started crying during one scene. Like real crying tears pouring out of my eyes. This makes no sense if you don’t watch it, but it was the scene where Seth the drug addict dad left Amber’s apartment and left her and her bro two packages with a note saying “for all the ones I missed” and the packages included birthday cards for there entire lives. ahhhhhh it really got to me it was just so sweet. I’m such a sap now a days. I seriously didn’t used to be.  Went to bed at 11 and of course am tired today, per usual. Ah the day I  just decide to go to bed at 9…

Today I need to run some errands. I need to return a lens I bought. I love it… but didn’t really use it in Argentina and just don’t have a use for it at the moment. I need to buy that cool toilet disposable cleaner thing and I need to buy thank you presents for the family we stayed with in Uruguay. I need to go to a tasty dinner at Blue Ribbon Sushi. mmm

Enjoy the gloomy day!

Actually back to reality

Last week was fake back to reality and this week is real. I suppose. But last week was great and it was awesome getting back into my schedule. Monday I went to spin class, Tuesday I did laundry, Wednesday I went to yoga and Extra Virgin with a friend in town, Thursday I went to yoga and Extra Virgin again with another friend (twice in a row? oy. I had to get the truffle mushroom pumpkin risotto that I regretted not ordering round 1), and Friday I went to spin and Diablo Royale with some friends. I didn’t eat meat or drink coffee the entire work week. I barely at cheese or carbs either. Who am I!? That is SO very strange for me but considering I OD’ed in Argentina it was very necessary. And surprisingly my stomach felt great. Well not really a surprise because I think my stomach hates dairy and heavy carb type stuff. But it was nice getting back into my workout schedule. Saturday I ran the 6 mile loop in Central Park. I forgot how hilly it is! I wasn’t running very much because of my shins but on Saturday my shins didn’t hurt at all. woohoo! And I barely stopped to walk. I really need to figure out how fast I run but I think it’s just under a 10 min mile. The marathoners really do inspire me. During these 6 miles I kept thinking “ah I cannot run a marathon I can barely get through these 6 miles” then I reminded myself that people actually TRAIN for marathons and of course my random 6 hilly miles hurt.

one of the remaining pretty trees in the park

Post run I went to the last Smorgasburg of the year. If you haven’t been you should definitely go next year. It’s a massive food fare in Williamsburg on the water. I ate a brisket sandwich and a pumpkin spice s’more. mmm

YUM

smorg

After delicious food I went to Anthropologie and Bed Bath and Beyond to finish my kitchenette! It’s amazing how much you can spend on a kitchenette. What if I had a real kitchen?! I probably didn’t need to buy anything from Anthropologie but everything is so freaking cute. I got 4 colorful bowls, dish rags, 2 candles, and an oven mit. At Bed Bath I bought cookie sheets and 2 forks, 2 spoons, 2 knives. Life of a single girl in a studio! Now I just need food…

pumpkin everything!

I want to be a candle person and I think that will happen. Usually I’m hopping from bedroom to living room and can never enjoy the candle in whichever room I stick it in but in a studio it’s the only room I’m in! Candle in bathroom candle in living/bed room. It’s perfect.

Sunday was a magical fall day. 60 or something and sunny. I went to my fav brunch spot Joseph Leonard then yoga with a friend at Yoga High in the LES. It was my favorite teacher Sara’s last class before maternity leave! She’s having her baby November 30th and was still teaching, correcting our bodies AND giving us massages. what?! Talk to me at 8.5 months preggers and see what I’m doing. I bet you money it’s not massaging yoga students. Love her.

I can’t believe this week is Thanksgiving! I’m excited for the Thanksgiving Marathon run (NOT running a marathon) and eating a lot of food at friends giving! There are about 6 of us cooking and enjoying Thanksgiving together. I’m cooking stuffing (hahahh) I’ll document everything because it’ll be rather amusing.

Anyway happy back to reality for me Monday!

Loca en Locales

I’m back from my 2 week trip to Argentina! I went with one of my best friends who I went to SC with, studied abroad with and lived in Santa Monica with post college. We both think traveling is the greatest thing in the world, we both love to eat and drink delicious food and wine, we both love jumping and yoga pose photos and we think anyone we are with should join in on the fun. Last year we went to Iceland, this year Argentina and who know what next year will bring… possibly Nordic road trip!

Here is a quickish (quickish is such a lie) recap via photos:

We flew into Buenos Aires and hung out there for the night. Immediately became obsessed with dulce de leche, medialunas, cafe con leche and empanadas.

ohmygod i want 100 million of you right now

We met up with our third Patagonia travel buddy and hopped on a flight to El Calafate.

Our hostel!

My awesome friend Lindsay!

Happy Halloween from Patagonia

This is our third friend John. We call him Jooouuuaannnn (it’s John in Portugese).

El Calafate chic

After lots of food, massages and malbec we made our first stop in El Chalten to hike Fitz Roy.

you are so pretty

We luckily met a nice Brazilian dude at the microbrewery the night we arrived because the next day the three of us were standing staring at an arrow for Laguna Torres just wondering which way the arrow even pointed then life savior Brazilian walked by. We asked him for directions then he said “if you take this you won’t see Fitz Roy.” COULD YOU imagine if we travelled 2 hours by bus and missed Fitz Roy? The Fitz Roy loops was about 12 miles and we did it in 6 hours and didn’t stop for lunch. Hardcore. This is me being hardcore:

hard.core

We hopped on the bus and went back to El Calafate for the Big Ice the next day. The Big Ice entails hiking Perito Moreno glacier for 3.5 hours. It really is a site to see. The glacier is about 20 stories high and moving 2km a day (I think) and big chunks of ice break off and make thuuunderous noises (fact). Really cool.

you are huge

"ya no jumping or yoga pose photos in crampons. dangerous..."

I can’t believe this is my second glacier hike (first was New Zealand) but like… who hikes glaciers?! Anyway, see that blue water? It was SO BLUE. I tried to stop and look in the opposite direction of the group and just take in the natural wonder that I was standing on. Hard to grasp but I tried to embrace the moment :)

Once we got back to El Calafate we ate A LOT of meat. carne platter para dos por favor!

yes please

Side of dulce de leche with 3 scoops of calafate helado? sure!

guess which part we finished?

After a very fun 4 days in Patagonia we went to Buenos Aires to be locales. Buenos Aires was awesome. I want to be back there as I type. We were so lucky that we were able to stay at Lindsay’s friend’s place because she introduced us to her friends, told us about the local spots, gave us keys and we basically lived her awesome BA life for a week. It was fun practicing our spanish “quieres charlar conmigo?!” was our token line and we actually were able to order food and get around and have a simple conversation! shocking right? no this is sad since I took 6 years of espanol. tragic.

We spent a day doing lots of touristy things like the Recoleta cemetery, this massive metal flower that opens and closes with the sun, the Malba museum and Puerto Madero. Our second touristy day included La Boca (the super colorful buildings), tango show and San Telmo market. In between we were being locals, dancing, going to Uruguay and eating and drinking x 10.

Recoleta Cemetery

Behind our awesome matching umbrellas is the metal flower

tango. pure passion.

just being locals. no big deal.

La Boca (I thought ALL of BA was like this. false)

oh more dolce de leche? yes!

We really wanted to see Iguazu Falls in the north but it was $600 round trip and we could not justify. We almost bought a flight to Iguazu for $300 and the site changed the date to November 20th. Luckily the transaction didn’t go through. Soo we went to Uruguay! Why not? My friend Laura has family in Montevideo so we thought it’d be nice to meet them, see local life in Montevids (as we called it) and eat a home cooked meal. We took the Buquebus to Colonia (met a local restaurant owner Guido in BA who recommended La Florida so we obviously had to stop in Colonia), hung out there for a few hours, bus to Montevideo and ate, shopped, drank, then bus to Punta del Este the next day. Punta is like the St. Tropez of South America. It is spring down there though so it wasn’t “bumpin'” like it would be in the summer (and kind of cold boo). P.S. the Buque part of the Buquebus is awesome. It’s like a cruise ship.

Colonia

snack time in montevids

Punta del Este!

Our Uruguay trip ended with Casapueblo, the coolest most beautiful place ever.  It is a hotel/museum by Uruguayan artic Carlos Paez Vilaro in Punta Ballena.

amaazing

We wanted to come back just for a Wednesday night in BA because it was a big “after office” night at Terrazas. After office is our version of happy hour. Our version of happy hour consists of a few discounted drinks at a bar around 5pm and Argentines consider happy hour a full on dance party at a massive outdoor/indoor club type place at 9pm. It.is.awesome. I think my favorite part about Buenos Aires was the dancing culture. People are salsa dancing everywhere! Even at our little pre party people started dancing! I learned how to dance bachata. Love it. How can you not? It goes… 1,2,3 hip bump, 1,2,3 hip bump. Amazing.

Terrazas

This is what BA Chic looks like if you're wondering

The big earrings are SO trendy there right now. Don’t I look Argentine?

The next day we were off to Mendoza to go wine tasting. It was great and Argentina Malbec is unreal and cheap and delicious. I feel a bit spoiled having grown up in beautiful California where you can go wine tasting, tan at the beach and snowboard but being in Argentina next to the Andes wine tasting is a bit cooler.  We lived the life of luxury even though we are 26 and shouldn’t be living some luxurious life, but for 24 hours I think it was worth it and much needed and a great way to end the vacation.  We went to Zuccardi Family, Luigi Bosca, Archaval Ferrer (owned by 5 friends who just wanted to start a winery. so cool) and lunch at umm I forget the name but it was some amazing 4 course wine pairing type lunch.

wild boar bbq. yes those are bacon wrapped french fries.

the Andes

triangle pose in the vineyard? necessary

vino

Honey moon style. Don’t worry we went RIGHT back to being grungy travelers when we discovered our flight from Mendoza to BA may be cancelled because of ash in the air and a strike. Considering we had a flight to catch 7 hours after our Mendoza flight back home we couldn’t really risk it sooooo we hopped on a 14 hour overnight bus! First class though. Lay down bus beds. Bingo and wine. Awesome.

I never thought my last day on this vacation would be hanging out with the locals, eating helado in the park, tanning at a friend’s apartment pool, and watching boys play video games but that’s exactly how my vacation ended. I kept delaying the cab 15 minutes but then I actually had to leave. Hands down one of the best vacations I’ve been on.
